Bell Send off Rally an Emotional Farewell

Tears had to be held back by many on Tuesday as Buddy Bell, one of the sweetest guys at DePaul, left to begin his three month prison term. Sentenced to Prison for Protesting the School of the America's, Bell remained upbeat. There were about 20 people at the prayer vigil, including Bell, his mother, members of DePaul Students Against the War, School of the America's Watch Ill. and the Gay Liberation Network.

The Prayer Vigil included quotes from Archbishop Romero and the Berrigan brothers. At one point, Bell even sang a song about the Hammer of Justice and the Bell of Freedom that he's ringing across the land (He has a great singing voice by the way!).

After several hugs and goodbyes, Bell left to begin his prison sentence. He will be back at DePaul in the Fall Quarter.

Buddy Bell Send Off Raly

Buddy Bell, the DePaul student who bravely "crossed the line" to protest the School of the America's, has been sentenced to three months in a federal prison and will have his send off rally April 11th at 7 AM in the DePaul Quad (lawn area west of the library on Fullerton). Students are encouraged to come and support Bell. Buddy committed a non-violent civil disobedience against a military training school where some of the worst human rights abusers in latin american history have recieved training on torture and how to eradicate social movements. Those trained at the SOA use what they are taught to maintain inequality and corporate domination across Latin America.

Those wishing to write to Buddy in prison can send their letters or soft cover books to:

Buddy Bell # 92561-020

Satellite Camp
P.O. Box 1085
Oxford, Wisconsin 53952

ASU and DSAW call for freedom for all political prisoners and for the SOA to be immediately and unconditionally shut down.

Aftermath of "Warrior's" DePaul Appearance

Close to fifty pro-diversity anti-warrior students attended the Conservative Alliance's event to oppose hate. In attendance were members of the Asian Cultural Exchange, Activist Student Union, DePaul Students Against the War, Feminists In Action, The Gay Liberation Network and Anti-Apartheid and Pro-Queer former professional Wrestler, "Zebra the Kid".

Two students were kicked out after the "Warrior" stated that Gay people are not as legitimate as Heterosexual people and Kwanza was not as legit as Christmas. The two students pointed out that it was in violation of the student handbooks prohibition against Harassment because it verbally demeaned students. Suzanne Kilgannon, director of student life and Bob Wachowski director of Public Saftey (and the person responsible for banning Giuseppe) evicted the two students on orders of Nick Hahn, but let the Warrior continue to preach bigotry and hate.

A steady stream of students became disgusted with the Warrior's speech and left, some visibly shaken. Among other highlights of the evening, the warrior blamed homeless people for being homeless, immigrant bashed by saying immigrants come to this country to "defecate" on America and blamed "Jungle Bunnies" for spreading AIDS in Africa. He told one student to "Masterbate at home", shouted at both Jim Doyle the VP of Student Affairs and Hahn the republican.

During the Q and A session, 40 students stood up and walked out, disgusted with the harrassment. One of the students was visibly crying. After, the students got together and wrote down the harassment they witnessed and how it offended them. They plan on meeting in coaliton with other groups to file complaints with the University and to hold the sponsoring organizations accountable.

DSAW and ASU look forward to meeting in coalition to take the neccessary next steps against hate. DSAW and ASU suggest that the demands of this coalition include a full apology from the sponsoring organization, the banning of DCA and Republicans from reserving rooms and receiving Student Allocation Funding Board money. Further we suggest that the demands of this coalition include the banning of the Young America's Foundation from DePaul property. When DCA reserved a table to conduct their racist bake sale, the University saw them abusing their ability to reserve tables at DePaul, and has prohibited from from tabeling. Now they have abused the ability to reserve a room and receive SAF-B money, and should have those revoked from them.

Feel free to e-mail the following people to express your disgust of right-wing bigotry at DePaul:

Students to Take Stand Against "Ultimate Warrior"

The Ultimate Homophobe DePaul Students Against the War and the Activist Student Union are calling on all those who stand for Queer Liberation, a Just Peace and for and end to Racism to demonstrate against the Homophobic and Racist Ultimate Warrior.

Come dressed as a left wing wrestler- 'The Commie Commando', 'Feminist Fury', 'Anarchist Attack', 'The Black Panther', 'Socialist Slam', 'Captian Queero, 'Iraqi Insurgent', 'Subcomadante Marcos' or any other ideas you have. We also need a referee to watch the Warrior's violation of DePaul's Harassment policies.

April 4th, Tuesday 4:30 pm- Rally against Hate- DePaul's Lincoln Park student Center- Belden and Sheffield, near the Statue of Fr. Egan.

5:00 pm- Warrior will speak in Room 314b of the student center. The lecture is free and open to all. We encourage all to watch the Warrior closely for when he violates the student handbooks rules against harassment.

The Ultimate Warrior, a WWF superstar, might be remembered by many as the masked wrestler who battled Hulk Hogan in Wrestlemania, but few know about his ultra-right wing and homophobic views. Since retiring from Wrestling, the admitted steroid abuser has hit the college circuit, preaching hate.

The Warrior (his legal name) was asked to appear on 'Byte This!' a TV show about wrestling. In his rejection of the show he said, 'Order the queer and the cripple who host the show to read what I have written here?'

At an appearance at the University of Connecticut, Warrior lamented that multiculturalism and tolerance has resulted in a society where 'the bum is as legitimate as the businessman?, that queers are as legitimate as heterosexuals?, that Kwanza is just as legitimate as Santa Clause and Christmas.' When asked to explain his view that that homosexuality is illegitimate Warrior said, 'because queering doesn?t make the world work.'

He told a gay student to 'take that object out of your mouth when speaking to me'

Warrior mocked a woman upset at his homophobic remarks and told her 'Don?t have an orgasm honey.'

When an Iranian student asked the Warrior a question, Warrior told the student to 'get a towl'

Warrior then played a video of himself ripping an Iraqi flag to pieces.

The Warrior speech was so out of line that the UConn Republicans issued a public apology stating, 'We brought the Ultimate Warrior to campus because we wanted to host a thought-provoking discussion from an individual who would appeal to a broader range of students than normal, given his background. Sadly, the Warrior?s presentation accomplished none of these goals and we were horrified like most of the UConn community by the display.'

The Ultimate Warrior would have you think that this is all just being politically incorrect, that we are 'girly-men' who aren?t allowing him to speak his mind. The fact is that his statements are part of a right-wing agenda which discriminates against innocent people though the free trade agreements Warrior promotes on his website to the depriving of homosexuals of their rights. It?s outrageous that Warrior claims that it?s politically incorrect to gay-bash in a country where gay marriage is outlawed, and homophobes control all three federal branches of government, and homophobic preachers are allowed to protest at funerals.

Further his statements are clearly forms of harassment, as outlined in the DePaul University Student Handbook. The DePaul Republicans, as outlined in the Student Handbook, are required to not bring any speaker which will harass students or disrupt the learning environment.

Which is why DePaul Students Against the War and the Activist Student Union are calling on all those who stand for Queer Liberation, a Just Peace and for and end to Racism to demonstrate against this Ultimate Homophobe and Racist.

Come dressed as a left wing wrestler- 'The Commie Commando' 'Feminist Fury' 'Anarchist Attack', 'The Black Panther', 'Socialist Slam' 'Captian Queero', 'Iraqi Insurgent', 'Subcomadante Marcos' or any other ideas you have. We also need a referee to watch the Warrior's violation of DePaul's Harassment policies.

April 4th, Tuesday 4:30 pm- Rally against Hate- DePaul?s Lincoln Park student Center- Belden and Sheffield, near the Statue of Fr. Egan.

5:00 pm- Warrior will speak in Room 314b of the student center. The lecture is free and open to all. We encourage all to watch the Warrior closely for when he violates the student handbooks rules against harassment

Day of Action Against Coca-Killer!

Thursday March 30th

Noon Rally at Lincoln Park Student Center

2:00 Protest at 1 East Jackson

Meet with Fr. Holtschneider to Present Demands!

Anti-Coke Flier

Students across the country will be holding actions against their Universities contracts with Coca-Cola on this Thursday March 30th. United Students Against Sweatshops called for the nationwide day of action to show student/worker solidarity against the violence of neo-liberalism and corporate globalization. Coca-Cola has been under fire for it's blatant disregard for human and workers rights in it's sweatshops around the world. In Colombia 9 trade union members have been assasinated by Coke and right-wing paramilitaries just because these union members were fighting for better working conditions.

At DePaul Students will be demonstrating against DePaul's contract with Coke. We believe that every day DePaul maintains it's contract, is one more day DePaul is violating it's Vincentian mission and is one more day DePaul is complicit in the campaign of terror against union members. DePaul keeps stalling by saying Coke is open to an investigation. Coke has actually worked to disrupt attempts at real independent investigations of it's bottling plants in Colombia. We say with the union workers in Colombia say that Coke is only trying to put out a glossy PR image to keep from losing it's contract and Coke has not improved in Colombia.

The Activist Student UNion and DePaul Students Against the War ask you to

RALLY: NOON outside the Lincoln Park student center, near Fr. Egan's Statue! PROTEST: 2:00 1 east Jackson, where we will present our demands to Fr. Holtschneider!

PLEASE FOREWARD THIS TO ANY LISTSERVES OR DEPAUL PEOPLE YOU KNOW!

Also, if you can't make it to the rally, be sure to Call and express how you want DePaul to take a stand against Sweatshops and not renew it's contract with Coke. Call DePaul's President, Fr. Holtschneider at 312-362-8000 and call the Executive Vice President of Finance at DePaul, Scott Scarborough at 312-362-6695

DePaul Students Demonstrate Against the War on 3rd Anniversary of Iraq Invasion

Over 7 thousand people took to the streets of Chicago on March 18th, 2006 to protest against the continuing war in Iraq and around the world. The slogan of the demonstration in Chicago was "End the War and Occupation, Troops Home Now!" The demonstration started with several feeders marches, including one at Lincoln Park, that fed into the rally at Union Park. After a spirited rally where DePaul student Gihad ALi spoke, the protestors either rode buses or marched to Michigan ave., where thousands marched behind anti-war floats.

While DePaul was out on Spring break, several DePaul Students and professors still came out to voice their opposition to the war, starting with the Lincoln Park Feeder March with Lincoln Park High School Amnesty International, and Lincoln Park Neighbors United for Peace. We expect to be receiving their accounts soon and will be posting them on this website.

Defeat the "Sensenbrenner Bill", Repressive Anti-Immigrant Legislation!

On December 16, 2005 a rushed piece of legislation, "the Sensenbrenner Bill", was passed through the House. The bill gained fame as the most anti-immigrant legislation in recent history. It specifically targets day labor workers' centers for fines and would essentially close them down. It proposes to build a wall between Arizona and Mexico, classify all 11 million people currently in the U.S. without papers as aggravated felons and would charge anyone who aids undocumented people in any way with an aggravated felony. In other words...

Since its passage in the House, communities across the country have mobilized in opposition. Tens of thousands have rallied at the capital and in cities across the country with over 100,000 people marching in Chicago under the Banner "No to Sensenbrenner. We Are America." The Senate judiciary committee on immigration is currently reviewing a bill proposed by Senator Specter that would have similar provisions in a more watered-down form.

One piece that is rarely mentioned in all this activity is the affect such legislation would have on day labor workers centers like the Albany Park Workers' Center in Chicago or CTIWorC in Austin, TX or CHIRLA in Los Angeles. The bills would cut government funding to such Centers, require extensive immigration status checks, and prohibit municipalities from requiring the involvement in businesses that drive the day labor market. This is on top of already making all undocumented workers and anyone who aids them a felon. Essentially, it would force day laborers back to the street corners and into the shadows instead of passing reforms that would increase their ability to integrate into the U.S. and its workforce.

We need your help to defeat this legislation. Please send the letter below to your Senator urging them to vote no on any bill that would negatively impact day labor workers centers.

Pun Plamondon to Speak at DePaul

Pun Plamondon, white panther Party founder and elder in the Ottwa Tribe will be speaking at DePaul on March 20th, at 6:30pm at SAC 254. His Supreme Court case in the 1970's set the precedent that the FBI can't tap phone lines unless they have a warrant. This was a hard fought right that Bush is trying to strip away today with the NSA spying scandal.

DePaul Attacked by Hate Crime

On the morning of Weds March 8th, 2006, University Hall and several other buildings were vandalized by neo-nazi hate graffitti. The Univerity held a Prayer Vigil that evening. Later there was a community forum, where many students condemned this act as only one in a series of racist and hate inspired attacks. A brief listing of which includes- two African-American students accused of stealing at the Dominicks on Fullerton and Sheffield, a Jewish student who had a swastika drawn on his marker board, physical attacks on queer students, and most recently, the racist bake sale.

The Activist Student Union, our affiliates, allies and friends condemn this act of hate, and all other acts of hate. We will continue work to bring the perpetrators of this and other hate crimes to justice.

DePaul Student Arrested for Protesting the School of Assasins

Just the Beginning

By Buddy Bell

The day of my direct action, everything was ready. I had attended a meeting the night before where I made arrangements for leaving my bond money and my bag (the bus I came in on was leaving the same afternoon). There was a media committee that wanted me to write down a few comments they could include in a press release to my local newspapers. Some people taking care of logistics at the meeting told us they had found a weak spot in the concertina-wire fence where we would be able to crawl under. If that should prove impassable we might also find some way to an unfenced section. They couldn?t disclose where they found the spot (maybe a government agent was among us at the meeting) but made arrangements to meet us and lead us there. Some friends from DePaul furnished me with a lot of granola and fruit, for what I imagined could be a hike through some remote wilderness to the fort?s border.

Hands Off Giuseppe!

By: Raechel

So, the question is, why is a man who literally saved the life of a fellow DePaul student now banned from the campus? It really comes down to Giuseppe's love of solidarity. Even though his 3 year scholarship had expired, Giuseppe, with the invitation and permission of many, many students and student groups, still wanted to help participate in campus activism. Because of that, it seemed perfectly natural that he would be at the annual campus involvement fair, held this past year on September 11th. However, when spotted sitting at the Student Government table with fellow friend and DSAW member Cyndi Torres, SGA President Wes Thompson requested to Student Life that Giuseppe be removed from the fair.

Ward Churchill Speaks at DePaul

On October 30th, 2005 DePaul was lucky enough to have activist, author and scholar Professor Ward Churchill appear and speak to a packed audience. Churchill is a Professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He has been involved with the American Indian Movement, and led a protest of the Columbus day parade that managed to disrupt the celebration of Columbus the mass murderer. He has written a number of books about the US governments genocide against native peoples, the FBI?s secret war against the Black Panthers and other topics. He came under fire from conservatives last spring for an article he wrote about the September 11th attacks entitled, ?Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens.? In this essay, Churchill pointed out that while there were innocent people who died on 9/11, janitors, firemen and secretary's for example, there were also bureaucrats who profited off of the destruction of the ?third world.? Churchill termed these stock traders, CEO's and military commanders ?little Eichmann's? a reference to the Nazi war criminal who despite being a rather quiet desk job type of person, masterminded the Nazi?s ?final solution.? Churchill also had the audacity to point out that the US commits 9/11 style terrorism everyday, and that the justification the Pentagon uses for it is strikingly similar to the justification used by Al Qaeda for the 9/11 attacks.

Student Government Supports Coca-Cola Boycott

By: Alejandro Acierto

After about two hours of debate and one ten minute recess, the Student Government Association passed a resolution to endorse the boycott of Coca-Cola products at last Sunday?s General Body Meeting. The Student Government Association will join the collective voice of about forty other student organizations on campus and nineteen other universities and colleges around the nation, including NYU and U of M (who have most recently been added to the list). The call to boycott Coca-Cola products is part of an effort to put pressure on the multi-national corporation to participate in a third party investigation for allegations of human rights abuses and environmental concerns in several countries around the world, including Columbia, India, Turkey, and Indonesia.

Reports from the World Festival of Youth and Students in Venezuela

In the beginning of august, four DePaul students joined 120 young Chicagoans and seven hundred people from around the country to go to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to visit the 16th World Festival of Youth & Students, a gathering that has met since 1947 in many different countries. There we met with some fifteen thousand delegates from over one hundred different countries, and thousands of young Venezuelans, all activists who are struggling for social and economic justice in their respective regions, and against imperialism worldwide. We will be planning reportbacks in the coming months, but here are some of the reports from a DSAW militant.

How Student Government Fails to Listen to Students

Matt Muchowski

Last Spring, Alejandro Acierto lost the presidency of Student Government by 22 votes to a leader of the DePaul Democrats- Wes Thompson. Thompson ran on a slate with a member of the DePaul republicans- Nina Mohseni. Despite the democrat-republican alliance, it was Acierto's running mate, Cyndi Torres, who won the vice-presidency of Student Government. The two articles in the following issue of the DePaulia made no mention of how close the race for president was. They also didn't mention that Torres received more votes than Thompson. Those DePaulia articles especially did not mention Thompson's attempts to disqualify Torres during the election.

DePaul's Law School and the Iraq War

In the world of politics, names can be deceiving. Take the No Child Left Behind Act which cut funding for schools that need it most. There is the National Endowment for Democracy which helped orchestrate a failed coup against democratically elected President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez. The frosting on the cake however is the Department of Defense. You have to look past deceiving titles like "Operation Iraqi Freedom" to get to the real meat of the issues.

Setting the Record Straight

Revolver's Matt Muchowski Interviews DePaul Professor, Author and Activist Norman Finkelstein

Many new students might be asking, Who is Norman Finkelstein and why should we care? Finkelstein is a professor in the political science department, who has become famous and controversial for his defense of justice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While some authors defend Israel no matter how atrocious it's occupation of Palestine is, and go as far as to twist the facts, Finkelstein has consistently pointed out the glaring differences between what Israel claims to be- a democracy with a good human rights record, and it's actual actions in Palestine. A Jewish professor, both of whose parents survived the horror of the holocaust, Finkelstein has become a voice for those who are not heard in Palestine. Several weeks ago he was on the front page of the Chicago Reader, a free weekly paper, because of his new book Beyond Chutzpah: on the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and Abuse of History, and his ongoing feud with Harvard Professor and Israeli apologist Alan Dershowitz. Revolver managed to send Finkelstein an e-mail with several questions, which he was gracious enough to respond to and answer.
